Huaorani Ecolodge Trip of a Life Time Stay in an eco-lodge situated at the headwaters of the Amazon and run by the Huaorani, one of the most isolated ethnic groups on earth: first contacted by the outside world only 55 years ago, they speak a language that is unrelated to any other. You’ll learn to use a blowgun, hear their leader relate the tribe’s fight against oil exploration, and take a two-day meander down the Shiripuno River in kayaks, watching for tropical birds and monkeys.

Best Adventure Travel Companies Seeing Ecuador in-depth is what you can expect from a Tropic Journeys tour: trekking through the Choc-bio cloud forest (a biodiversity hot spot); hiking into the interior of the Galapagos islands; snorkeling, hiking, and looking for howler monkeys and jaguarundis in coastal Machalilla National Park. The company utilizes ecolodges throughout the country. This year it debuts its own lodge, Huaorani Ecolodge, which consists of a collection of traditional palm-thatched, solar-powered cabins. It is operated in conjunction with the Huaorani people, an Amazonian tribe whose members will take you dugout canoeing and hiking.

Senderos January 2010 Ecuador - Huaorani Ecolodge www.huaorani.com
So what did we discover ...... their blow-pipes are enormous and we never expected to learn how to shoot the darts with such accuracy; a machete in the hands of the Huaorani chief could be used like a delicate craft knife; how endearing the young children are when they peer at you out of the long grass as the plane lands; just why the preservation of the rainforest is so vital to the Huaorani not to mention the rest of mankind; a beautiful people; a breathtaking environment; an unforgetable experience ........ don't hesitate!
In November Huaorani Lodge was once again voted Best Sustainable Tourism Project by the UK’s Latin American Trade Association (www.lata.org). Tropic were also ‘Highly Commended’ in the Virgin Holidays Responsible Travel Awards (see Telegraph article online)
Other news:
A pair of Crested Eagles have been spotted nesting close to the Huaorani Ecolodge! These are very rare, large birds - similar to the Harpy Eagle. Our naturalist and Huaorani guides are monitoring.
Work has continued on improving the infrastructure at the Nenkepare camp.
I thoroughly enjoyed my trip to Huaorani in November. It was a really fascinating and amazing experience. Thanks to you all for arranging such a memorable trip! RM, Wexas Nov 09

Senderos August 2009 Ecuador - Huaorani Ecolodge www.huaorani.com
Huaorani Lodge was a life-changing experience. It re-defined luxury for me, the luxury was to be able to get to know the Huaorani people, how they live, what they think, to admire their strength; all in all, to share those few days in their forest. I came back with a sense of being privileged with the experience.
After the awards last year we had a very busy first semester at the Huaorani Ecolodge. Thank you all for your support.
We are moving forward with plans shared with you all during 2008. The handicrafts´ shop in Quehueri’ono is almost ready as well as the laundry. Our new fleet of kayaks (yes, kayaks!) is ready and will be great for the journey downriver for our clients expecting to be more active during their stay.
With the experiences gained during the first year of operations we are now moving towards green certification to formalize operations and continue improving the quality of our services.
Conservation: as you all know the main reason why we built the Huaorani Ecolodge was to protect the Huaorani territory and thanks to your support we are now looking at the first Huaorani Conservation Area. Our foundation Conservation in Action is working with the United Nations through its small grant programme with UNDP and the World Tourism Organization in establishing this reserve that undoubtedly will empower the Huaorani Association as improve our client’s experiences.
Finally, we are almost ready to launch our new community programme with the Secoya community establishing the other end of our Amazon Conservation and Tourism Corridor.

Senderos Spring 2009 Ecuador - Huaorani Ecolodge www.huaorani.com
Staying here was the highlight of our 4½ weeks in Ecuador. Not even The Galápagos could compare! Poling in a canoe along the Shiripuno River, the only sounds the gurgle of water, the call of birds and the swish of paddles – heaven! Everything we did, from walking through the jungle to meeting local people was very special, very personal. IT WAS THE EXPERIENCE OF OUR LIVES. GO!!! March 09
We have plenty of good news to share:
* New Manager - The lodge has a new manager now working with Pato, his name is Eduardo a former Kapawi Ecolodge manager. He is already reviewing all our procedures and will be in charge of the Best Practice process we will undergo in the next 6 months. During this period our intention is to integrate a Huaorani manager to work with our team at the lodge. Waponi!
* ECORAE - our foundation signed a contract with ECORAE (Instituto para el Ecodesarrollo regional Amazonico). With this joint venture we'll be able to continue improving services, like a complete management and H&S system, and infrastructure at the lodge.
* Kayaks! We all agree that the Huaorani ecolodge experience is all about the wildlife and culture, but we believe that you can attract different market niches. We are producing a fleet of 8 Kayaks (4 singles and 4 doubles) for our departure expeditions downriver. We are sure your active clients will be very excited to be part of this! We will have this option available from September and for the last 3 months of the year this alternative won’t have any additional cost.
* Interpretation center - It’s been a necessity for us to have a better presence and better services for our clients leaving the Huaorani territory at the Shiripuno bridge. ECOARE helped us with the seeds of this and now we have Unesco, WTO and the Ecuadorian ministry of environment interested in helping us developing the project.
* In the local news - during this month we were very happy to share our beautiful project locally in two of the major magazines America Economia and Vistazo (http://www.vistazo.com/impresa/reportaje/?id=2458
* More awards: We were ranked as the Best Adventure Travel Company from Ecuador by National Geographic Adventure!
* We are delighted to share our first Trip Advisor review.
