Accessible only by small aircraft, its tremendous variety of wildlife, such as pink dolphins, macaws and the many other species of birds and mammals to be found here, make it one of the most outstanding sites to visit. The site has also been constructed in strict accordance with the Achuar concept of life. It uses not a single metal nail, depends on solar energy, uses biodegradable soaps and has a waste recycling system.

The lodge itself accommodates up to 50 guests. The 20 double and triple rooms come complete with private bathrooms, sun heated showers and electricity provided by a system of solar panels.

Kapawi offers itineraries of  4 and 5 days which include visits to the rainforest where you will experience its wildness and its wildlife, watch brightly coloured birds, canoe rides and visits with the Achuar community. A cultural program has an established in which you will be able to share experiences with the Achuar community and learn about their style of life.

Flight from Quito to Kapawi. We arrive in the Kapawi community where a guide will provide information on the cultural diversity of the area, where you will meet both Quichua and Achuar people. We will then travel by canoe to the Lodge, where we will have lunch.

The afternoon will be spent watching some of the bird life that abounds on the Pastaza river. Dinner and optional evening walk. (information on prices is provided below)

Optional bird watching outing to see parrots and guacamayos in a very special place called Saladero. After breakfast we will walk and learn about the many uses Achuar have for palm trees. A box lunch in the forest will be followed by a conversation about the rules we will need to respect in the Achuar community and on how Chicha, a typical beverage, is prepared. In the afternoon we will visit the Wachirpas community and will go with an Achuar family to visit their Chacra (the place where they live and grow their food). We will then return to the lodge. There will be an after dinner chat about the Achuar cosmovision.

Early in the morning we will take part in a Wayusa ceremony, in which another local beverage is used to interpret dreams. After breakfast, we will walk and learn about hunting practices and traditions. Lunch. In the afternoon we will visit an Ashuar community, where we will have the opportunity to interact with the Achuar families. Return to the lodge. (Price information below)

Return to the hotel, breakfast, walk to a lagoon where you will learn about medicinal and eatable plants. Box lunch and return to the hotel paddling in quillas or canoes; during the trip you can stop to fish. In the afternoon you will be free to walk around the trail (optional). In the evening we will enjoy a typical Achuar dinner. At night we will sit around a bonfire and talk about Achuar mythology and history. (Price information below)

We will make a trip to the Capahuari River for bird watching. After breakfast we will learn about, and perhaps take part in, activities such as using blow pipes, learning about making baskets and painting faces with Achiote.

Highlights

Responsible travel

Kapawi, developed together with the Achuar community itself, is the largest community-based project developed in Ecuador. It was created to provide a high standard of service in one of the remotest and most pristine areas of the south eastern Ecuador, far from the oil extraction and other practices which cause so much damage to the environments on which communities such as the Achuar depend.
