In the heart of Ecuador's "Avenue of the Volcanoes", just one hour south of the historic colonial city of Quito, TROPIC offers traditional mountain hospitality with a dose of adventure. Here travellers can choose between hiking and mountain biking in the clouds, riding horses with the local ‘chagras’ or Andean cowboys, and ziplines that will take you soaring over the spectacular mountain scenery.
Close to the truly majestic snow capped Mount Cotopaxi, the world’s highest active volcano, visitors will experience an authentic taste of Ecuador’s colonial past during their stay in the comfortable accommodation provided by a real working ranch house built in colonial style, and nestled in the unsurpassed beauty of this region of the Andes.
The Cotopaxi expedition is designed for the more adventurous traveller. And if that description fits, you will find a broad range of activities here: horseback riding, mountain biking, trekking, hiking, mountain climbing, rappelling, bird watching, camping, as well as cultural exchange with the local communities.
Your stay also includes a visit to an ecological reserve on the slopes of the Mt. Pasochoa volcano, just one and a half hours from Quito. The Reserve is well known for its forests, rivers and spectacular waterfalls. Here, you will uncover the secrets of the high Andean forest and enjoy the first set of zip lines / canopy tour established in Ecuador.
Each of our lodges (renovated, comfortable ´hacienda´ houses that once belonged to the country´s wealthy land owners) has its own magic, ecosystem and distinctive climate. All three are located in an area known ancestrally as the “Four Corners” where you can see four impressive volcanoes: Mt. Rumiñahui at 4,712 m, Mt. Pasochoa at 4,200 m, Mt. Sincholagua at 4,893 m and Mt Quilindaña at 4,878 m.
The haciendas reflect their colonial and even pre-Hispanic history - one was even an Inca refuge - and offer comfortable lodging in one of the most pristine regions of the Andes. You will enjoy the relaxing, inviting facilities with the spirit and essence of Andean buildings: large buildings constructed with local materials such as wood, adobe and sun-dried brick.
