Quito City Tours

Ecuador is history, fascinating indigenous cultures, slow winding rivers and lush tropical forests, spectacular snow capped volcanoes and some of the most exciting wildlife on earth.

The place to start is Colonial Quito, a city of narrow cobblestone streets lined with whitewashed walls and, rising above, the steeples and cupolas of the city´s many spectacularly decorated historic churches. The city has one of the best preserved colonial centres in all South America and its integrity was assured in 1978 when the United Nations declared Quito a World Cultural Heritage site.

The Mitad del Mundo, a site located just 30 minutes north of Quito, is the monument that marks the equator at its closest point to the city. Archaeological evidence shows that both pre-Inca and Inca civilizations recognised and celebrated the equinox, the day the sun is directly over the equator.

The Spanish city of San Francisco de Quito was founded in 1534 by the conquistador Sebastián de Benalcázar, whose house can still be seen. The city is packed with historic buildings, spectacularly adorned churches such as San Francisco and La Compañía, museums such as the Museum of the City and the Casa del Alabado a new boutique museum that provides a excellent way to understand the city and the country´s archaeological history, as well as the Presidential Palace and the tomb of Mariscal Juan José de Sucre, Simón Bolivar´s right hand man who died as a young man of 26 and is buried in the city´s cathedral. There is lots to see and do in Quito.

Quito also has a great choice of exclusive boutique hotels Including special locations in the centre of the colonial centre close to the main square and the Presidential palace, or close to the city´s exciting Mariscal district with its restaurants and bars. Or if you prefer
higher up with great views across the length and breadth of the city. If a quieter option is what you´re looking for, Tropic offers other options at reasonable prices further from the city centre, in some of the city more interesting barrios.
